Patience

It’s something many of us are lacking in and when you’re in a role that is demanding, patience is vital. You probably either are a patient person or you aren’t, so if you fall into the latter category, you’d be best re-thinking if care work is right for you. If you’re lucky enough to be quite a patient person, this could be an ideal profession for you. If you’re working with adults with special needs or elderly people, patience is particularly important, as often they aren’t familiar with social protocol – or have simply forgotten how to be polite.

Humour

You’ll need to have a sense of humour to get on well in this job. This is not only important when it comes to the care of your designated individual, but also for your own sanity. Care work can get tough at times and if you can’t laugh at the things that happen, you’ll likely go the other way – crying! Trying to find humour in something each day and you should feel your mood improve.

Organisational skills

It may be that the person for whom you are caring has several medical appointments to attend each week, so you need to remember when and where these are. If you aren’t good at organising a schedule, care work may not be the ideal choice for you.

Resilience

Competition for care work is so high these days that you’ll need to expect a few bouts of rejection.
