A Woman Who Had it All A lady doctor achieved her golden career by passing a roundabout route, following her purpose firmly even if she did take time out for some quirks in life. However, as we go back to high school, we see that she was not so single minded back then. As a local high school girl, she was divided between taking up medicine or linguistics. Hedging her bets, she took all the sciences along with languages French, English and Spanish. This girl, whose forte is communication, sought her Spanish teacher’s advice in making her final choice. This is what her teacher told her while you can be a doctor who is also a language expert, you cannot simply be a physician on the side.
Her A-level subjects, pursued at the local community college, were therefore exclusively science subjects. She found the results to be discouraging after two years but this did not stop her. She only passed in her favorite area which was Chemistry.
She entered the university through the back door of Natural Sciences with the intention of transferring to medicine on her second year. She claims to have enjoyed this point in her life but then she wasn’t able to perform well enough to be able to transfer. The grades she got were more B’s than A’s. For this reason, and for her growing love of chemistry, she therefore decided to complete the degree.
She majored in chemistry and food technology thanks to her fondness for chemistry. The field allowed her to bag an honors degree. Looking for work after graduation took the toll on her. There was simply no work for her the first year she was out of university. There were zero jobs. She looked at the food industry for a job. Whenever she was down, she would wonder why she ever went into this.
There was only one person, a drug dealer, who was able to offer her a job and he offered her something tempting as he saw her capability in using industrial kettles. She describes that instance to be so alluring with the amount of money offered but then she made it very clear that she was taught by her parents to never consider money to be everything so she did not take the offer. While firmly holding on dreams to become a physician, she continues to apply to medical school. As she still did not heard from medical school, she was offered a teaching job which she accepted with trepidation.
She became a trainee manager the next year after leaving her teaching job after deciding that she needs more money if she ever gets accepted in medical school. She retold the time when back then, she delved on the pros and cons and even had talks with different people she knew and they all told her the same thing she will just remain as a simple employee if she chooses to stay with the bank. Medicine offered her the option of having her own business and doing what she wanted.
Medical school welcomed her after two years. The first year, in the usual tradition, was a mixture of fun and learning. She slathered it on herself. She partied once in a while, she is not a bookworm but she studied enough. Her first year was riddled with honors in community health and the distinction of being among the top 10 percent in Physiology. She got so fascinated with community medicine as it enabled her a sense of connection with many people. You gain access into the homes of your patients to know how their lives ran before. She admired the exceptional program.
She initially thought that she wouldn’t be bothered emotionally when she cuts up cadavers and she would only get squeamish. However, pathology was a different story. She’d cry for over ten weeks when new deaths came to them and required them to do autopsies. The deaths led to her feeling some emotional loss. A strong background in chemistry follows her love for pharmacology. Chemicals inside the body that interacts and cures diseases was something that she found so amazing. Though it is not usual for her, she goes to the library to read journals. With her award in Pharmacology, everyone got surprised.
She shied away from being a bookworm and gained the reputation of a party organizer along with five other study mates. Every single one of them did well in the finals with three taking home honors. A member that belongs to her group brought home tons of medals including one which was an award in gynecology. Now, we can confidently say that we never wasted our time.
